What’s on my work desk this Wednesday is a quick tip on the usefulness of using tissue paper for a transfer.
When it comes to my artwork, I am often not much of a planner. I love to make backgrounds, so that’s where I start…..what I’m going to do with that background remains a mystery!
When I’m liking the the background, I start trying to figure out the foreground, hmmm I don’t think that is the recommended method…..but, oh well! The piece I just finished was no exception.
Loved the turquoise, yellow, touch of orange background….why not, those are the colors I ALWAYS use! So, now what to do…..I spied some die cut butterflies on my desk, I traced around them on an old book page, cut them out and glued them onto my background. I added some more details but I had this big open space that needed something…..what to do, what to do?
I know, I was playing around the other night sketching a woman’s face….I’ll use that!
Since I never plan ahead, I had used heavy watercolor paper to paint this on and it was too thick to cut out and just glue it onto the background at this point because I would not have been able to blend the edges into the page.
I had just bought some Transfer Artist Paper but if I used that the image would face the other way…..it had to face the same direction as the original…..what to do, what to do?
I know, I’ll make a tissue paper transfer. Easy peasy, really! Just cut a piece of white tissues paper and a piece of freezer paper to 8 1/2 by 11”. Heat up the iron, iron the tissue to the freezer paper and run it through your printer. Wait, you say, it will still face the other way…..oh, no, my pretties…..you glue it down with the back side up! It is tissue paper….and very transparent, so it doesn't matter which side is up! Yeah! Problem solved.
If, I had planned this out….I would not have used that many butterflies but otherwise it’s O.K.! It’s good to exercise your problem solving skills!

I would never have guessed that is how you make a tissue paper transfer. Really nice face and great transfer, too. I like how you showed your technique. Thanks for taking the time to inform us.
What a transformation - from the first movement of a drawing to the finished product. Love it. Must try to do something like this myself.
Thanks for sharing and the inspiration - Hugs, Neet #1
Wow....fantastic! Never mind the tissue paper look at your picture! Now, back to the tissue paper transfer...awesome, really well done! Some time the best plans are no plans at all. This is really beautiful! I love it!
Love your collage. Don't think there are too many butterflies. Happy WOYWW from #13

What a wonderful result! So lovely. I always start with the main image, so your method is fascinating to me.
Nice tip worked really well. What is freezer paper?
Bridget #28 very interesting collage
Great artwork - I always prefer to plan the background first too - what goes on top always takes me forever to do! (No. 34)
Wow ...love the end result ....an interesting technique to solve your problem ....must go back and re read it ...might help it stay in my seive like brain.xx
Your project is looking beautiful, I love the butterflies xx
brilliant! I've not heard of the tissue paper transfer before...your page turned out beautifully.
Just lovely. Beautiful work
FANTASTIC work!! Thanks for the walk through on your creative process. Stunning end result.
Keep smiling and creating
I can't believe how well the transfer on tissue paper came out, could almost be the original. And I like the butterflies, not too many in my mind.

That's great! Good technique, too. I'm another one that loves creating backgrounds but can't always think what to put on them! What I'd really like to be is the sort of person who sees the picture as a whole, and not as background and foreground. Got to work on that one!!

What an amazing technique! I love hearing how you do things...which directions you go, and what comes next, etc. This peice turned out really great!
How cool is that?!? I'm not a planner either so I know JUST what you mean...but you sure do know how to 'make it work'!
